A Service Level Agreement for a data environment is a document in which a supplier and a client define which services are delivered, within which timeframes, and what happens when that fails. For Qlik and Talend environments, Snowflake data warehouses, ETL pipelines or erwin governance tools, it covers agreements on availability, response times, monitoring, change management and reporting. Treating it as a formality, a document you sign and file away, sells it short. A good SLA is the starting point of the collaboration, not the end point.

What it typically contains

An SLA for a data environment usually covers five elements.

  1. The scope: which systems, pipelines and dashboards fall under management, and which do not.
  2. Response times per priority: a production outage in a Snowflake warehouse demands a different reaction time than a cosmetic change to a Qlik dashboard.
  3. Availability standards, expressed in uptime percentages and maintenance windows.
  4. The reporting cycle: how often, and in what form, the client gets insight into performance, incidents and improvements.
  5. The change request procedure, so that a change request does not lead to chaos or scope creep.
