The end of the Oracle Warehouse Builder (OWB) era is rapidly approaching: early next year Oracle will stop support for the latest version of OWB. It is therefore important to start looking for an alternative now. What possibilities are there?

For many data warehouses, the existing Oracle ETL solution was a godsend. For the development of integration processes, OWB was the product of choice for a long time. And not only because the product was price-wise interesting, but also because it was well integrated into the Oracle database world. As of January 2018, however, OWB is no longer supported by Oracle. A migration to the costly Oracle Data Integration (ODI) is one solution, but are there any alternatives?

Migration options from OWB

An automated migration from OWB to another ETL tool is unfortunately not possible. Fortunately, there is another solution available: Talend Data Integration. This tool offers a number of advantages. Below we list the features of Talend Data Integration.

    1. Standard components
      A major plus of Talend Data Integration is that you can reuse the existing SQL statements, which in turn has the advantage that the mapping can be adopted. Talend has almost 1000 standard components that can be used for this purpose (connectors, transformation, etc), including Oracle and Postgress SQL.
    2. Available ETL functionality
      In addition, Talend has a comprehensive set of ETL functions. Data validation, mapping and transformation are all part of the standard functionality.
    3. Easy to use
      Talend’s graphical user interface is extremely user-friendly. No specialist knowledge of Java or any other development language is required. Knowledge of SQL is useful, but this is often present in the work field. In addition, cimt offers extensive training opportunities so that you can get started quickly.
    4. Support from Talend
      Talend calculates the annual license fees based on the number of developers (users) that use the application. The number of processors used or the amount of data therefore plays no role. This ensures a Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) that is on average one third compared to similar products. The licenses can be adjusted annually. So you know exactly where you stand every year.
    5. Support from cimt
      As a partner of Talend, you can of course also expect the necessary support from cimt.
      We can advise and assist you with the implementation and/or migration to your next step in data management and data governance. We can advise and support you in the choice of architecture, process management and project management. We also offer user training, so that you can continue independently after the completion of the project. And even after the project has been completed, we can continue to provide support if you wish. For example, maintaining and managing ETL jobs, performing upgrades or starting new projects to improve data quality.
    6. Open source
      Talend Data Integration is an open source tool. You can download the software for free and use it immediately. It’s a really easy way to get started!

Other tools

In addition to Talend Data Integration, there are several other tools, including Pentaho and PowerCenter. We briefly list the differences for you:

Pentaho focuses more on business intelligence, where Talend focuses more on data integration, quality and data management.

Informatica’s PowerCenter is similar to Talend in functionality, but the TCO is on average 2/3 higher than Talend products. In addition, training for PowerCenter users requires significantly more time.
